UPMC St. Margaret-Garden of Hope
The St. Margaret Foundation sponsored the design and construction of the Garden of Hope adjacent to the new Patient and Family Resource Pavilion thanks to a lead gift from the estate of Mrs. Helen Colwell, mother of Mrs. Comly Watters. The garden is a calm escape for patients and families from the anxiousness that often accompanies healthcare challenges. A community effort, this garden was supported by local garden clubs, physicians, board members, employees, community members and patients. One hundred percent of the funds for construction came from donations.

The garden was designed by Jennifer Deemer, MLA, ALSA of Eisler Landscapes and built by Eisler Landscapes. The garden includes 1,188 sf of patio space, a 16 foot fountain, and multiple seating areas. The garden is surrounded by 2,740 sf of lush planting beds to screen the noise and views of the hospital entrance. Planting includes 6 varieties of trees, 10 varieties of shrubs, perennials and vines. The design also included extra large pots to allow planting by garden clubs, screen seating areas from each other, and bring plants to eye level for those in wheel chairs.
